Standing for Election – Do you care enough to stand?

Do you care enough to stand?

The next elections for your local council are on the 2nd May. You might be voting for who makes decisions in your local community but have you ever considered doing something more? Do you care enough to stand? Parish and town councils are at the heart of every community in Shropshire. You might be able to have a positive impact in your area by putting yourself forward for local council elections.

Are you already involved in your community?

Do you volunteer?

Do you have an interest in the upkeep and maintenance of your area?

Local councils form the most local level of elected government with an overall responsibility for the wellbeing and maintenance of their area. They are responsible for how their community spends their money and what services they should deliver.

Parish and town councils are currently being encouraged to deliver more local services as government looks to local solutions for local problems. The Localism Act 2011 gave new freedoms to local communities to make decisions about the services they want and how they will be delivered. The need for more local councillors who understand the needs of their communities and how to work closely alongside community groups is ever more apparent.

Do you think you can work effectively in partnership with community groups and voluntary organisations as well as other councils to deliver the very best for your area?

Can you monitor how well the council is performing and speak out on behalf of your community?

Some decisions will not be easy and you and your council colleagues will have to stick to the rules that guide your council.
